What kind of green school would you design?
Lesson 3

Engineering Lesson

90 minutes (2 45-minute classes)

Lesson Time: 

The purpose of Lesson 3 is to introduce the learning space Design Challenge and have students develop ideas and sketches for their designs, including: a) defining the problem, b) defining the goal & criteria for success, and c) identifying constraints or limitations on the design.


What will we do?

  • Define our design challenge by developing our purpose, requirements, and limitations for our green school design.

  • Make initial decisions about the energy system in our design.

  • Sketch our designs. 

  • Give & receive feedback on designs.

  • Generate a list of questions that we need to investigate for our designs.


Materials Needed

 Per student

Per Group

Per Class

  • Design Notebook

  • sticky notes


  • If doing the notebook digitally: computer or laptop

  • If doing the notebook on paper: extra paper for group sketches

      colored pencils

  • computer and projector

  • Classroom Energy System Consensus Model

  • markers

Advanced preparation

  • Preview slides and teacher guide. Replace image on slide 3 with your classroom model. 

  • Print handouts.

  • Decide how to group students to work together for the design challenge. This will be their primary group for the rest of the unit.
